The Rotunda museum, is located just of the shore and within walking distance from the town centre of Scarborough. we visited while on holiday in the area, Children under 18 are free then prices are £4.50 day ticket, or open day return ticket is £9.00 and concessions are £1 of these prices. If you pick up one of the information leaflets from somewhere like the tourist information centre, there is a voucher for £1 off day admission prices.

The building was built in 1829 and is one of the first purpose built museums in the country. once inside downstairs is just the reception, then there are stairs or a lift to go up, you are best to start from the top is the main display units all in the circle see panoramic view below. all the artifacts and displays have the information about that item, which is really interesting well for us adults the kids didn’t seem that interested, though if we explained what they were and did enjoy looking at the displays. The next level down has the Gristhorpe man , which is the oldest bronze age skeleton & tree truck burial find. this is really interesting about his life.  Including a interactive screen display of what he would have spoken like.

The very top viewing gallery above the main viewing gallery on the top floor is not always open due to safety and conservation, though a few times a year this is open for special events. You will discover the story of William Smith, the father of English Geology.

There currently is the lost dinosaur exhibition, there are loads of interactive things to do, with a lot of screens that you can learn about the various exhibition displays. There is also a sea dragon (Plesiosaur) that would have swam in Scarborough 100 million years ago. The displays cover from about 165 million years ago. There is also the Scarborough art gallery not that far away that does have good art exhibitions, we popped there before going to the Rotunda museum, as we was getting bit lost to find it and a local police offericer sent us there as thats where he though we wanted. We parked in the main centre so after visiting the museum had a nice walk around the town.

This is more of a educational museum, and for the price is worth a visit if in the area. Depending on your kids they may enjoy it especially if they are interested in history, we spent about an hour or so in the museum.

Remember there is also the Dinosaur cost in close by where you can discover fossils form the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and stretches over 40 miles which has some of the best geology in the world. Unfortunately we didn’t visit here but if you find he Dinosaur exhibition interesting would be worth a visit.
