Favourite Podcast & Android Apps

Im one for listening to podcast, from while working on the pc or tablet, going out and about, and even for going to sleep. I only started listening to podcast over the past year as seen a new podcast called The Retro Hour which gives the latest news on the retro games scene and they love the Commodore Amiga, which was my favourite computer back in the day.
Originally I started using Soundcloud which is great for music as well as podcasts but to be able to download for offline use you need to pay a subscription. So the main one that I have been using that does support offline mode for free is Stitcher With Stitcher you can have your own playlist. You can use listen later to download individual podcasts or you can set any play list to automatically download the latest episode of each in that play list. You can also when listening set it to automatically play the next one on this list.

I then heard of two other podcast that sounded interesting which are Maximum Powerup & Cranky Gamers Uk Unfortunately these aren’t available through Stitcher. The one I had been downloading from the website and the other I found the stream through Player FM, which I just thought was just a website so listening direct through the website. Then realised there was an App for Android. So downloaded the app just for the one podcast. Once installed you can create an account or use either Facebook or google to log in. This means that all your favourite sync between devices.
On first setup asks you category subjects you may be interested in, then found some of the other of the podcast I listen to, which I have detailed at the bottom of this page where on there as well. Again with Player FM you can download episodes by play list or individual episodes, This can either be done by downloading as a MP3 file or adding to the play later section. Just a tip on either of these apps you can change the storage location for the downloads to your SD card, as if like me you will download a few for offline, your device memory could fill up on a low to mid range device. Also you can change the play back speed, though I kept 1x though the max I could stand is aout 1.3x .

One great feature I have found with Player Fm is the Boost Volume which I find useful as when listen at night or when out walking I have two different Bluetooth earpieces for just one ear, but the volume when outside isn’t that load so this gives a good volume boost without me having another app running in the background.
I also prefer on Player FM that the icons for individual podcast are large which I then find easier to navigate to the podcast you want. So out of the three apps I have used I do prefer Player FM as I does have features that I find useful and has all the podcast that I listen to in one place.

Here are a few of other podcasts that I enjoy listening to.

The Infinate Monkey Cage Science panel show hosted by Prof Brain Cox & Robin Inc with a panel of guests. Interesting and also can be funny. I like it as like anything with Brian Cox.

The Naked Scientist Interesting science podcast with latest news and also covers a certain subject each week.

Retro Ayslum good retro gaming show.

Planetary Radio Astronomy and space show.

Hardcore Gaming 101 American podcast discussing listeners favorite games and then rate them.
