Upton House And Gardens – Edgehill Near Banbury Visit

While we was having a weekend away camping we went to Upton House and gardens in Edge Hill near Banbury. As we are National Trust members entrance is free though prices are Adults £10.90, Children £5.45 and family £27.27 with the option of gift aid. Prices are quoted from the time of our visit for upto date prices see the Website.

There is a large car park and lovely carriage drive /parade and you get an amazing view of the house. The day we visited it was a themed event in which the house was for sale in 1927 You had a little booklet giving you the perticiuals of the house and gardens. They let people into the house in groups and when in the main entrance a volunteer told us about the basics of the house. At this time both me and the missus thought then it would be a guided tour of the house (which we arnt that keen on this as yes they give you the history of the properties you are visiting, but it is nice to wander around yourselves as I think you take in more of the architecture, design etc) But after the initial talk you are free to make your own way round the property.

The gardens are lovely, we had a nice stroll around the differnt gardens at the time we was visiting there were repairs going on at the large pond, so was at a low water level. But still from the top of the garden you get amazing views around of the pond and the gardens. The gardens are set on different levels and there is a nice woodland walk. There are also some other pond with some nice koi in them.

Like any national trust property the insides are set in a certain period and lots to look at. One of the unusual parts of this house was the one bathroom which was in a nice art deco style, with silver painted walls and ceilings and the walls curved upto the ceiling, was one of the most interesting bathrooms I have seen. To walk around if you have a large bag (which I wear a backpack) this can be left securely at the entrance.

There is a restaurant and shops onsite, we had a picnic which there is a lot of seating and places to sit down and just enjoy the gardens or the views of the surrounding area.

We spent a good few hours around Upton House and gardens and did enjoy a our visit, Like i said the time we visited It was a themed event, though I don’t think they exploited this as much as they did, as would have been nice to have had after you finished looking round the house something like a comments form or even if the staff playing along with the theme and asked if you would have been interested in buying the property or even just your commments.
