Last year we visited the Hornsea museum in East Riding of Yorkshire, The museum looks small from the outside, but loads to do and discover inside. So don’t be put off when you walk past and think small so it won’t be worth it, because it is well worth checking out. Hornsea museum is sited in an 18th Century farmhouse which is a grade 2 listed building and the two adjacent cottages. We went while we were on holiday in the area. There is no direct parking for the site, but bout 50 yards down the road is the main public car park for the town. Prices are Adults £3.00, Senior Citizens £2.00, Children £2.00 and a Family Ticket £9.00 (Up to two adults and four children) We had a leaflet from the tourist information centre that gave a £1 of the entrance price. Prices listed are at the time of our visit so check their website for full details and opening times HERE.

You go through the main shop to go around the main building, there are about 10 rooms in the main house that you can go around, each room is highly decorated in the period. In each room there is information about certain items around that room with the history of that piece. Make sure you fully look around as there are some gems of items to see ie upstairs there is a large model of a sea plane hanging from the ceiling and a very highly detailed model of a sailing ship. In the children’s room there are loads of toys from years ago with some highly detailed dolls houses. There is a section about the seaside with a nice display of someone sitting on a deck chair as well as an old punch and Judy stall.

There is a nice well kept garden outside with several building’s around. The one shed has an old type of cart fire engine, all around the out buildings are filled with loads of period items. The main log outbuilding has lots of tools of the time with cart wheels and a few horse drawn carts. The one side wall there is a nice display of plaques that would have been on ships.

There are a few seats outside and a small picnic area. We didn’t take a picnic with us, but it may be worth it as you can spend a good few hours around the hornsea museum. Though there is no food available at the museum but because you are in the main town there are a few shops around with some cafés.

There is also two rooms dedicated to Hornsea Pottery, this is just opposite the frontage of shopfronts from the victorian era. The display shows about 2000 pieces of Hornsea Pottery. This was interesting to see all the different designs of pottery over the years.

We had a great visit the the hornsea museum and it is well worth a visit, the entrance prices are very reasonable. The museum is very informative and interesting. All the displays around both the house and the outbuilding are great and highly detailed. Though you do have to remember about your time limit on the public town chargeable car park. Also the main town is a very nice place to walk around with great sight to see including the church. It was worth the visit the kids did really enjoy looking around and learning about the different items around this great attraction. So great for a family day out.
