Jul 23, 2012

just a quick post about some of the events going on in Beacon Park, Lichfield over the 2012 kids summer holidays.

On the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of July there was a mini bug /beast hunt and pond dipping, we went on the Saturday to this was just £1 per child. You was guided around the park by a guide and you was provided with a box that contained specimen jars, white sheet, dustpan and brush and information sheets. We went from trees and hedgerows using the sheet and either brushing the branches or shaking them for insects etc to land on the sheet and them collect them in the jars for examination, the kids had a sheet so they could write and draw what they had found. Then onto part of beacon park looking under logs again to document bugs, insects, slugs etc that you had found. There was also the pond dipping using a small net and scooping into the pool and seeing what you could find. This was great fun and very good value for money as if you didn’t know what you had found the guide would explain about the insect etc and explain how to find the sex etc of the bug. Though with these basic tools you could try this with your kids anywhere ie like Cannock chase or even your back garden or local park.

On Wednesday 25th July there is paint your own bird box the price is £3.50 per child As part of our Love Parks Week celebrations, join the Countryside and Parks Teams and paint your very own bird box (while stocks last). No need to book, just turn up. Head for the Discovery Hub (behind the bowling greens)

On Thursday 9th August (incidentally my birthday 🙂 there is Beacon Park Fund day and teddy bears Olympics so join in the fun with many exciting games, sports and outdoor activities for all ages. from 11am to 3pm

On Saturday 1st September and Sunday 2nd September is the Lichfield Proms
Lichfield Proms in Beacon Park is Lichfield District Council’s free annual outdoor concert for the whole family. Now in its fourteenth year, the event is an opportunity to enjoy a late summer evening of al fresco dining, live classical music and fireworks. Since the first concert in 1998, Lichfield Proms has grown from strength to strength, establishing itself as an eagerly anticipated date in Lichfield’s calendar.

Attracting up to 10,000 visitors from across the region, Lichfield Proms takes place in the stunning surroundings of Beacon Park. A brass band plays a programme of popular music, to warm up the crowd as they find their spots. This leads up to the main concert which features a symphony orchestra and classically trained singers performing a varied musical programme. The evening culminates with a rousing sing-song and a firework finale. So, get your Union flags and hats at the ready, and join us for the event of the summer! Lichfield Proms in Beacon Park can only take place through the kind support of our sponsors, and donations on the night are very much appreciated.
