Lakes Aquarium Cumbria

We Recently went on a trip to thel Lakes Auarium which is near Ulverston in Cumbria. Price wise for just the aquarium was £6.86 adults, £4.57 Children or Family Ticket £26.360 (2 adults + 3 Children) these prices are direct from the official website which does include up 25% discount. Though because the aquarium at Lakeside is by the Lakeside & Haverthwaite railway you can get a joint ticket for the railway and aquarium this costs £34.80 But before we went on holiday I had found a discount ticket online which was half price, though I had to buy in advance from this website HERE. To see the info on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite railway read my article HERE.

The lake aquarium is like the sealife centre’s around the country, though I have been to the sealife centre in Birmingham and I would say this is better value and more interesting. As you go in by were you pay for entrance there is a nice little pool with koi and other fish in with stairs going up to the top, this is were you get a great view of the pool and fake waterfall which looks great, there is also a lift you gain access to upstairs. As you walk around the aquarium is separated into different sections, with aquatic life from different areas of the world.

There is a great walk through glass tunnel so you can see the fish swimming above. One section is of local aquatics from Morecambe bay including rays, seahorses, flatfish and British sharks. There is a tropical rain forest section that has lizards, marmoset monkeys (which are really cute 🙂 there is also a otter section with even a little tunnel under the floor for the otters to go through. One section is a interactive display about Africa and also the worlds first virtual dive bell.

The rock pool section was very interesting with different corals and creatures including anemones, crabs and prawns. There is also a main pool with different fish and rays in, this is were they do talks about different animals and fish, while we was there there was a talk about owls and snake with them available to touch and speak to the attendants that was doing the talks. There also is a nice little gift shop in the aquarium.

We really did enjoy going around the aquarium and because we had tickets for both the railway and the aquarium, we first went round the aquarium then back in after going on the train, there was also a quiz for the kids to do while walking around with questions about the different animal and fish etc, so the kids will learn about the different fish etc as they have to read the different information boards and sheets by the various displays. Like I have said myself I did enjoy this more than the sea-life centre in birmingham.

Below are some of the photos from the visit.
