Learning to ride a bike as a adult

Spread the love

It May seem strange that a adult at the age of 36 cant ride a bike, but its true I never learnt to ride a push bike, though I have been told that when I was very young I did have a bike with stabilisers, but my parents took the stabilizers off and I fell, and didn’t get on a bike again 🙂 Well I thought it was about time I learnt to ride a bike as my daughter can ride a bike perfectly and when she stops with me like going out on her bike, so I decided to try and learn to ride a bike, so here’s my experience about learning to ride a bike.

First I made a mistake about buying a bike, I brought a second hand one off ebay, but unfortunately the seller was a bit dodgy shall we say and the bike was knackered and me knowing nothing about bikes couldn’t fix it, So I brought a brand new one just a cheap starter bike like the ones from any outlet at approx £100, I is a 18 speed, dual suspension type. I had to part fix together now again because I don’t know anything about bike had to get my brother to help me tune the gears.

Now the bike was ready it was time to start to learn to ride it, I had found all different tips to start, some said take the pedals off and find a gentle slope and just free wheel down to get your balance, I tried this and was pointless for me, So I decided just to try the best i could to start with, getting my balance wasn’t that bad, so the best way I found was to be just on a wide flat path, and just keep practising. I have fell off a few times but not that bad 🙂 ,now myself I can sometimes get embarrassed, so I found it easier to practise early in the morning or when not that many people around. – mainly practised around a lake by where I live called chasewater, depending on the tracks I took it is around 4 miles of track to practice on.

Now I’m still not perfect even at the moment my 10 year old daughter can ride a bike better than me, I mainly have problems steering and wobbling, but I’m getting there at the time of writing this article I have only been on the bike around 10 times now, for maximum 1hr.

So in summary I have enjoyed trying to learn to ride a bike being the age I am, and do wish I would have learnt to ride at a younger age. I know there are a lot of people that can’t ride a bike in adult years, but I would recommend if you want to do it, then do it, yes you will get looks of people and especially kids while trying to learn, but persist and you can do it. I have and it now great.

like I have said I learnt to ride around chasewater on the brownhills / burntwood border in the midlands and if you do live around this area it is a good place to practice there is also a cycle hire shop there, though I don’t know prices. Also if you live around the cannock area there is some really good tracks designed for cyclist of all abilities within cannock chase around by the visitors centre off marquis drive.
